Before we get into the specific tea brands, we wanted to share a bit more info about the terminology you often see used in tea.

What Is Organic Tea?

Organic tea is made from USDA-certified organic ingredients, meaning the tea plants are grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. By choosing organic tea brands, you’re ensuring that your tea is free from harmful chemicals and cultivated using sustainable farming practices.

Why Choose Organic Tea?

  • Better for your health – No artificial additives or pesticides.
  • Richer in flavor – Organic tea leaves often retain more of their natural botanicals and antioxidants.
  • Supports sustainable farming – Organic farms focus on soil health and biodiversity, preserving the ecosystem.
  • Fair trade benefits – Many organic teas are also fair trade certified, ensuring ethical labor practices.

Whether you prefer loose leaf tea, bagged tea, or matcha, choosing organic loose tea ensures that you’re drinking a pure, high-quality product that benefits both you and the planet.

What Is Fair Trade Tea?

Fair trade tea ensures that farmers and workers in the tea industry are paid fair wages and work under ethical conditions. A third-party certification guarantees that the tea meets strict social, environmental, and economic standards.

Why Choose Fair Trade Tea?

  • Supports fair wages & labor rights – Farmers and workers receive a living wage and work in safe conditions.
  • Promotes environmental sustainability – Many fair trade teas are also organic, reducing the use of harmful chemicals.
  • Ensures high-quality tea – Fair trade farms often focus on small-batch, carefully crafted tea, resulting in richer flavor and fresher ingredients.
  • Prevents child labor & exploitation – Certified farms follow strict ethical guidelines to protect workers.

When you choose fair trade organic tea, you’re not just getting a delicious cup of tea—you’re also supporting ethical farming practices, sustainability, and social responsibility.

    Good afternoon Oksana & Max!

Have you heard about AJARA T? Would be happy to fill you in.

I am interested in knowing why The Republic Of Tea was not mentioned in here? They have been around since the early 1990’s. What do you think of their product line?

Could you please respond when you have a moment!

    Thanks! Brian Wolfgang Becker

    1. Oksana & Max St John Avatar

Hi Brian, we responded to you over email. The Republic of Tea has not come on our radar when we were researching best organic tea brands. It’s not a brand we have tried before and thus not one we recommend in this post.

    Hi There,
I’m curious to know what Traditional Medicinals didn’t make your list? They are one of the top organic tea companies in the country.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I am curious to know which of those you mentions are tested against heavy metals?

    Thank you! =)

    1. Oksana & Max St John Avatar

Hi Kardo, you can probably find information about heavy metals on each brand’s website. This is not something we specifically looked into when writing this article.

  4. Gloria Huff Avatar

Can you suggest any tea plantations I could directly buy organic tea? Prefer buying directly from grower. Any suggestions?

    1. Oksana & Max St John Avatar

Most tea plantations do not sell their teas overseas, so unless you plan on visiting a country like Sri Lanka or India in the near future and can do a tea plantation visit and pick up tea right there on the spot, it would be difficult to buy organic tea straight from the source. Unfortunately, we do not have any recommendations.

  5. Gloria Huff Avatar

What about Vahdam and Teakruthi? I’ve bought from both….straight from Ceylon and India. I’m sure there are others

    1. Oksana & Max St John Avatar

I do not think either one of those teas are certified organic. Looks like they also sell tea from a variety of tea plantations and essentially act as the “middle man”.

You may want to look at Rishi Tea & Botanicals. I’ve found their Matcha Super Green and Tumeric Ginger teas to be superb and very, very enjoyable. And they are natural and organic.

  7. Bec Avatar

The stash tea website and boxes say nothing about it being organic. No label. How do we know if it is or not? Or was that a typo?

    1. Oksana St. John Avatar

Hi Bec, not all Stash teas are organic, but they have quite a good selection of organic varieties. Just type in “Organics” in the search bar on their website and you’ll see all the options pop up. Enjoy!

Traditional Medicinals are organic teas that have been sold in grocery stores (here in Florida, it’s Publix) for years. Great varieties and flavors.

I have been making TAZO tea for years and recently I have been making it in big batches and refrigerating to pour over ice, as a beautiful flowery iced tea. The Passion tea I have always loved. Recently I have been having some stomach/intestinal pains and wondering about the citric acid (derived from mold) and the herbicides, pesticides in this tea? Any clarification would be great~ as it comes up excellent with no known harmful additives in the Yuka app. Thanks so much!

    1. Oksana & Max St John Avatar

Hi, i’m not sure about Tazo tea, as it’s not one of the brands we recommend or consume ourselves. I believe it only comes in bags not the loose tea variety? And it’s not organic, so yeah its quite possible that it’s not the highest quality tea you can get. I would highly recommend switching to an organic loose leaf tea variety.
