Be they black tea or green tea, loose teas or ground leaf teas, traditional tea or herbal teas, we’re hooked. Our love for organic teas, whether in a tea bag or not, started decades ago, but during our travels, we have had a chance to learn more about tea and gained a more in-depth understanding of teas from around the world. Our first immersion into the world of tea happened at one of Sri Lanka’s traditional tea plantations, where we learned all about tea production and the finer art of tea. It was here that we learned about the health benefits of organic tea and the importance of fairtrade tea practices

Since then, we’ve been sampling organic teas worldwide, searching for the best organic fair-trade teas we can enjoy no matter where we are. Over the years, we’ve gathered a list of our all-time favourites, from white tea to green tea and beyond!

Before we get into the specific tea brands, we wanted to share a bit more info about the terminology you often see used in tea.

What Is Organic Tea?

If tea is made from USDA-certified organic ingredients, the tea plants were grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. The healthiest tea is made of organic herbs and tea plants. More and more synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and especially pesticides are being found to have adverse effects on the environment and on people’s health. With no artificial ingredients to worry about, it’s clear that buying organic tea brands is the best option for every avid tea drinker when it comes to sustainable tea.

What Is Fair Trade Tea?

Organic ingredients aren’t the only concern. Fair Trade tea means that an unrelated, independent third party has declared that the company producing the tea pays its workers a fair wage. It also means that working conditions at the tea factories are above satisfactory. Child labour is prohibited, the farms obey monitored environmental standards, and producers are paid a premium to apply to healthcare, wellness, and conservation initiatives.

Choosing Fair Trade organic tea means making the safest, healthiest, most sustainable choice for yourself, others, and the environment.

It’s better for the plants, it’s better for the soil, it’s better for the animals, it’s better for the workers, and it’s better for you.

We have searched the globe high and low and come up with this list of utterly delicious, best organic tea brands around. Not only do we approve of their taste (as self-confessed tea connoisseurs) but they are all organic, fair trade, or both!

Teabloom is a relatively young company compared to other best organic tea brands. Launched in 2016, with a commitment to health, artistry, and sustainability, their mission is admirable. The company is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and while they only ship in the USA, they offer distribution via Amazon stores in several countries.

Teabloom sell a number of products, ranging from teaware and mugs, to variety of teas. Their collection of loose-leaf teas is particularly noteworthy.

Teabloom’s collection of teas is extensive, offering teas from the standard to the unorthodox. They sell their tea primarily as loose-leaf tea in canisters, and have over 40 varieties to choose from. Variety packs with smaller canisters and a selection of pyramid sachets are also available. Whether you’re looking for something to calm you down before bed, something to perk you up in the morning before work, or just something to enjoy in the afternoon, whether its black, green, white or herbal, Teabloom has something for you.

One of their more unique varieties is their blooming teas or flowering teas. Blooming teas come in small, round bundles of leaves and flowers that have been carefully bound by artisans. When dropped into a pot of hot water and given time to steep, the bundle relaxes and blooms into a beautiful and delicious bouquet of flowers, offering a beautiful tea with a mild taste and gentle properties

Teabloom also offers a selection of elegant glass teaware, including teapots and kettles, French presses, pitchers, and cups and mugs. All of their teaware is made of clear borosilicate glass, so you know it won’t absorb any unintended flavours as time passes. Unlike ceramics, their teaware doesn’t get worse with age, and you don’t need to worry about tasting anything other than your tea.

All of their tea comes with instructions for brewing it hot, cold and iced. You can buy it online in organic loose-leaf tea or pyramid bag form. Tea varieties are all certified organic and fair trade. They come in a variety of black, green and oolong flavours.

Stash Tea

Stash Tea Company has been around since the 1970s, and its popularity has been steadily growing since it showed up. Their teas are all-natural, organic, Kosher, and GMO-free, and many of them are made with organic, fair trade tea plants. On top of that, Stash teas taste incredible, no matter what type you prefer.

Their sustainable efforts go beyond the tea leaves themselves, though, as most of the packaging they use is also sustainable. Most of the “plastic” that they use is actually derived from corn, and each tea bag is biodegradable and GMO-free.

Little Red Cup is one of the organic tea brands we can definitely get behind. Although they are based in Maine, the small family-owned company was inspired by the family’s many years traveling abroad in China. They were inspired by China’s signature simple, loose-leaf tea varieties.

Today, they sell tasty varieties of black, green, white, and oolong teas (we’re a big fan of their Jasmine Green). But best of all, all their tea is certified organic and fair trade. They source their products from worker-owned Chinese cooperatives.

  1. Brian Wolfgang Becker

    Good afternoon Oksana & Max!

Have you heard about AJARA T? Would be happy to fill you in.

I am interested in knowing why The Republic Of Tea was not mentioned in here? They have been around since the early 1990’s. What do you think of their product line?

Could you please respond when you have a moment!

    Thanks! Brian Wolfgang Becker
    North Vancouver, Canada

    1. Hi Brian, we responded to you over email. The Republic of Tea has not come on our radar when we were researching best organic tea brands. It’s not a brand we have tried before and thus not one we recommend in this post.

  2. Mickele Carpenter

    Hi There,
I’m curious to know what Traditional Medicinals didn’t make your list? They are one of the top organic tea companies in the country.

  3. Hi,

I am curious to know which of those you mentions are tested against heavy metals?

    Thank you! =)

  4. Can you suggest any tea plantations I could directly buy organic tea? Prefer buying directly from grower. Any suggestions?

    1. Most tea plantations do not sell their teas overseas, so unless you plan on visiting a country like Sri Lanka or India in the near future and can do a tea plantation visit and pick up tea right there on the spot, it would be difficult to buy organic tea straight from the source. Unfortunately, we do not have any recommendations.

  5. What about Vahdam and Teakruthi? I’ve bought from both….straight from Ceylon and India. I’m sure there are others

  6. You may want to look at Rishi Tea & Botanicals. I’ve found their Matcha Super Green and Tumeric Ginger teas to be superb and very, very enjoyable. And they are natural and organic.

  7. The stash tea website and boxes say nothing about it being organic. No label. How do we know if it is or not? Or was that a typo?

    1. Hi Bec, not all Stash teas are organic, but they have quite a good selection of organic varieties. Just type in “Organics” in the search bar on their website and you’ll see all the options pop up. Enjoy!

  8. Thank you! This article was exactly what I was looking for! I’ve been enjoying The Mighty Leaf for a while and recently was given some Art of Tea (which was divine!) and I wanted to see how they stacked up with people more familiar with the tea world than I am. Thanks again!

  9. good articles but I have one question to ask, if I make ask what are the attributes that enchanted this pesticides teas, and how can we get if it’s expire and the benefits of it.

  10. I have tried several recipes, Best Organic Chai Loose Leaf Tea and this is by far the best!!!
    Thank you
