Hacienda Pinilla is also one of our favourite spots in the Tamarindo area, and we know it intimately. Max’s family owns a rental property inside the community, so we are there almost daily, whether to hang out at the beach club, hit the gym, eat at the restaurants, or take our nieces to the playground. This guide comes from that first-hand, day-to-day experience rather than a single visit.
Where Is Hacienda Pinilla, and Can You Visit?
Hacienda Pinilla sits on the Guanacaste coast about 1.5 hours (75 km) south of Liberia International Airport (LIR) and a 30-minute (17 km) drive south of Tamarindo. It spans a former 4,500-acre cattle ranch with direct access to three beaches: Playa Avellanas, Playa Golondrina, and Playa Mansita.
One thing to know up front: Hacienda Pinilla is a gated community and is not open to the general public. You can access it and its facilities by staying in one of the vacation rentals inside the community or at the on-site JW Marriott, or as a resident. If you book a stay inside, you get access to the beach club, beaches, and amenities during your trip.
About Hacienda Pinilla
Hacienda Pinilla has been an ongoing project for over four decades. The historic 4,500-acre ranch was bought by Atlanta developer Hg Pattillo in the 1970s, when it was open pastureland, and has slowly been transformed into a beachfront gated community with a beach club, homes, vacation rentals, hotels, and a golf course.
The community offers direct access to three beaches, Playa Golondrina, Playa Mansita, and Playa Avellanas, and is surrounded by dry forest and clear water, which makes for plenty of outdoor activities from mountain biking to surfing and horseback riding.
How to Get to Hacienda Pinilla
The nearest international airport is Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. The small domestic Tamarindo Airport also handles some commuter flights.
By Car
The easiest way to reach Hacienda Pinilla is by car. From Liberia airport it is about a 1.5-hour, 75 km drive southwest. From Tamarindo it is just 30 minutes (17 km) south. There is no public transport inside the community and it is large, so we strongly recommend renting a car so you can get around and pop out to the shops or activities.
By Bus or Shuttle
There are no direct public links to Hacienda Pinilla itself, but you can bus to Tamarindo first. The Alfaro line runs daily from San Jose to Tamarindo (about 6 to 7 hours), and La Pampa runs from Liberia to Tamarindo (about 2.5 hours). From Tamarindo, arrange a taxi or transfer to Hacienda Pinilla.
Best Time to Visit Hacienda Pinilla
Guanacaste has two seasons. The dry season runs December to May, with the hottest, clearest weather from January to March, when daytime temperatures often top 35°C (95°F). This is high season, so expect higher prices and bigger crowds along the coast.
The rainy season runs from late May, peaking in September and October, then easing by November. Guanacaste is one of the driest provinces, though, and the rain usually comes only in late afternoon, so the green season can be a great-value time to visit.
Things to Do at Hacienda Pinilla
There are enough facilities inside Hacienda Pinilla to fill your days without ever leaving the community. Here are our favourites.
Spend Time on the Beaches
One of the best things about Hacienda Pinilla is access to three miles of coastline. Playa Avellanas is the most popular, accessed from the beach club in the heart of the community, and is often rated one of the best beaches in Central America, with great surfing and bodyboarding.
Playa Golondrina is reserved for residents of the Golondrinas sub-community (you need to be staying there, or know someone who is). Playa Mansita, in front of the JW Marriott, is not private (no beaches in Costa Rica are) but is reached through the hotel.
Go Surfing
Playa Avellanas is famous for its surf. Stretching out in front of the beach club and further south, it has a sandy bottom with some small reefs, creating breaks for beginners and advanced surfers alike, and far fewer crowds than Tamarindo. Watch for big surf, rips, and hidden rocks on the sides of the beach, and get local advice if it is your first time here.
To arrange a lesson (a good idea for beginners), book through the beach club concierge or head to the south end of Playa Avellanas to Avellanas Surf and ask for Mauricio, a good friend and one of the best instructors in the area.
Enjoy a Day at the Beach Club
The Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club sits at the end of Playa Avellanas among the mangroves and is the social heart of the community. It has direct beach access, an infinity-edge pool, a restaurant and beach bar, a fitness centre, a spa, a kids’ playground, and event space.
It is easy to spend a whole day here, and we often do: relax by the pool, paddle out for a surf, have a seafood lunch, and stay for a sunset cocktail. There is a fee to use the facilities, even for guests staying in villas inside the community, but it comes off any bill from the restaurant. The beach club is also a popular wedding and event venue.
Beach Club access: the club is for community guests, residents, and JW Marriott guests rather than the outside public. If you are staying inside Hacienda Pinilla, you are set.
Go Mountain Biking
Hacienda Pinilla has over 45 km of trails across the old ranch, forest, and coastline, with routes for every level. Head to the BikeCraft shop in the middle of the resort area for e-bikes or classic mountain bikes, plus guided tours along the beachfront and technical single-track.
Try Horseback Riding
The community has stables and roughly 16 km of scenic trails, plus miles of beach to ride along, with tours for all experience levels. You can book a horseback adventure through the beach club; packages typically include a shuttle, guide, water, and helmet.
Play Tennis
Hacienda Pinilla’s Tennis Center has two courts, with private and group lessons, monthly socials, kids’ after-school programs and camps, and racquet rentals.
Play Golf
Designed by architect Mike Young, the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course is a 7,500-yard, par-72 course considered one of the best-maintained in the region, with an ocean backdrop. There are instructors and rentals for novices, and the club hosts tournaments through the year.
Where to Stay in Hacienda Pinilla
Hacienda Pinilla is made up of holiday homes, permanent residences, and resorts. Like other Guanacaste gated communities (similar to Las Catalinas further north), it welcomes both residents and visitors, with options for families and couples.

In front of Playa Mansita, the JW Marriott Guanacaste is the top luxury resort in the community, with an infinity pool overlooking the beach, an award-winning spa, a fitness centre, a kids club, and four on-site restaurants. The resort also arranges tours and activities including kayaking, surf lessons, horseback riding, zip-lining, and ATV tours.
Where to Eat at Hacienda Pinilla
If you are renting a villa, you will have a full kitchen and can cook or hire a private chef. Otherwise, the beach club and on-site resorts have upscale restaurants, and Tamarindo is just 30 minutes away for a wider range of options across budgets.
Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club Restaurant
Open from breakfast through dinner, the beach club restaurant is a relaxed spot for a meal after a surf, by the pool, or at sunset. The menu is varied, and our favourites are the open tacos, the bowls, and anything with raw fish.
JW Marriott Restaurants
The JW Marriott Guanacaste has four restaurants. Azul Grill is the beachfront spot for sunset snacks, Tamarine serves an Asian-inspired menu, Sabanero is a genuine Guanacastecan steakhouse, and Mansita serves international dishes all day.
