Winter has a way of asking different things of us. Less movement, more stillness.
Fewer plans, more listening.
By the time December arrived, my November had been full of travel, projects, and commitments layered one on top of the other. I could feel it in my body, my mind, and my nervous system. I knew I needed space. A pause that allowed me to slow down and reset.
I had only recently learned about Dimensions Retreats, a wellness-focused retreat space set in the Algonquin Highlands, east of Muskoka and about 3 hours north of Toronto. The timing felt aligned. A 2-Night Strength + Flow Winter Wellness Retreat here felt like the right way to step out of a busy season and create space to breathe again.
Arriving at Dimensions felt like a big exhale. The final stretch of the drive wound through snow-covered roads and tall trees, gently easing me out of the hectic city pace and into a calmer rhythm.

Over the next two nights, the retreat offered a beautiful mix of activities, experiences and treatments – for the body and the mind – all designed to support rest and recovery.
About Dimensions Retreats
Dimensions Retreats is a Canadian wellness retreat company that combines neuroscientific research and evidence-based therapeutic healing modalities with luxurious hospitality. The retreat centre was created by a team with backgrounds in health, rehabilitation, and therapeutic care, and that influence is felt throughout the experience.
Wellness here isn’t treated as a trend or an add-on. Instead, it’s approached through thoughtful programming that balances movement, rest, nature, and evidence-informed therapies.

Dimensions offers a range of wellness experiences throughout the year, from themed weekends to longer restorative stays. Regardless of the format, the focus remains consistent: creating an environment where guests can slow down, reconnect with their bodies, and step away from daily demands without needing to plan or organize anything themselves.
The Strength + Flow Winter Wellness Retreat is one of the many ongoing retreat offerings at Dimensions. Hosted by Toronto-based yoga and Pilates instructor Carla Kava, the weekend offered a blend of movement with yoga and pilates classes, along with a wider experience created by the Dimensions team.

Accommodation At Dimensions
Accommodation at Dimensions Retreats is designed to support rest in a very intentional way. Guests stay in private cabin suites, each thoughtfully positioned to create a sense of space and quiet across the property. The cabins are modern, featuring a minimalistic design, with natural materials, large windows, and views that look out onto the surrounding forest or lake.
Each suite features a comfortable bed, a spacious bathroom with a bathtub, a large desk, and a private deck, offering plenty of space to retreat to between meals, sessions, or treatments. The layout encourages downtime, whether that means curling up with a book by the window, journaling, or enjoying a cup of tea.

During my wintery stay, the cabin felt particularly cocooning. I found myself drawn to the window during pockets of free time, sitting quietly with a cup of tea in hand and watching the snow drift through the trees. Those unscheduled moments became just as restorative as the guided sessions – an important reminder of how much space and stillness can support rest.
I loved ending the days on my own in the cabin, soaking in the bathtub while reflecting on the day. A perfect way to wind down and integrate the day’s discoveries.

Meals at Dimensions
The menu for each Dimensions Retreat is custom-designed around the dietary preferences and requirements of the group. The intention is to create food that feels healthy, nourishing and satisfying, particularly during the winter months.

Each meal during the retreat was a pleasant surprise. The menus changed throughout the weekend, and every plate felt colourful, well-balanced, and thoughtfully prepared.
Breakfasts were served family-style and included dishes like shakshuka, potato galette, waffles, poached eggs, buckwheat toast and more.

Lunches and dinners were platted and featured dishes like chicken kale meatballs served with spaghetti squash, smoked carrot empanadas, wagyu culotte, and cauliflower tacos, to name a few. Desserts were small and well-balanced with sorbet options, affogato and churros.

All meals were enjoyed communally, which offered a rhythm to the day and helped bring the group together for lively conversation.
It’s important to note that no alcohol was served at any of the meals at Dimensions, which felt intentional and was much welcomed during a wellness retreat. Instead, we enjoyed a lovely selection of kombucha, home-brewed iced tea, lemonade and more.
Activities and Wellness Experiences
The retreat began with a group sound healing session in the Ceremony Dome. Set against the quiet of the winter landscape, the session offered a gentle transition into retreat mode and helped mark the shift from travel and arrival into a slower, more grounded rhythm. A much-welcomed start.

The following day formed the heart of the retreat. The morning began with an early Pilates Fusion class led by Carla, blending yoga and Pilates in a way that felt both energizing and accessible.
After a nourishing breakfast, we headed out for a guided snowshoe nature walk, moving slowly through snow-covered trails and reconnecting with the surrounding landscape. What stood out to me was how intentional the experience felt. Throughout the walk, we were encouraged to notice and engage with nature, to touch the trees, to feel the crunch of fresh snow beneath our feet, and to move with awareness. A short guided meditation midway through the forest path was a particularly nice touch.

The retreat program included two private wellness treatments, scheduled throughout the day.
One of the more intriguing sessions for me was BioSound Therapy. Having recently begun exploring sound healing myself, I was curious to experience this modality in a therapeutic setting. During the session, I lay on a treatment bed wearing a headset, listening to sound frequencies while the bed gently vibrated beneath me. The session followed a gradual progression of sound frequencies, starting with deeper, grounding tones and gradually moving toward higher, lighter ones, guiding the body into deeper relaxation as the session unfolded.
My other treatment was a Thai massage, which was unlike any Thai massage I had experienced before. Rather than feeling vigorous or forceful, the session was gentle and supportive, blending light movement with a softer, more intuitive touch. It felt like a combination of hands-on bodywork and energetic healing, creating a sense of ease and relaxation that lingered well beyond the session itself.
Just before dinner, we gathered in the Ceremony Dome for an evening Yoga Flow – a perfect way to transition into the evening. After dinner, time was intentionally left open. Some participants gathered around the fire for a casual chat over a cup of tea, while I chose to retreat to my cabin and enjoyed a long bath to cap off the day.

Final Day
The final morning included one last Yoga Fusion session followed by breakfast, offering a calm and unhurried close to the retreat. Even over the course of just two nights, the experience felt grounding and restorative.
As I packed up my car and set off on the drive back to Toronto, I found myself wishing the retreat had been designed with one additional night. I would have loved more time to enjoy the space, linger without an agenda, and remain present a little longer.

Final Thoughts
Spending time at Dimensions highlighted how impactful even a short wellness retreat can be. The natural setting, well-organized schedule, and range of wellness experiences made it easy to slow down and step away from everyday routines. In just two nights, the retreat offered a practical reset – one that supported both physical rest and mental clarity without requiring a long time commitment. It’s an experience I would highly recommend.

Dimensions continues to offer a range of seasonal retreats throughout the year through its year-round programming, which features curated weekends focused on movement, restoration, and time in nature. Another yoga-focused retreat, similar in spirit to the Strength + Flow weekend I attended, will take place in late February. You can explore upcoming retreats and dates HERE.
Looking ahead, Dimensions is also expanding its wellness offerings through a new partnership, Unbounded Dimensions, which brings together evidence-based wellness practices, therapeutic care, and elevated retreat hospitality rooted in nature. One of the first retreats under this collaboration, RENEW, took place over NYE, and shorter weekend versions are planned for early 2026.
Whether you’re looking for a short seasonal reset or a more immersive experience, Dimensions offers retreats that create space to slow down, rest, and be present.
