Oksana and I have backpacked, driven cross-country, lived in a camper van, and stayed in tiny homes. All those years on the road taught us the importance of packing light.

Unbound Merino, a Canadian brand known for travel clothes and apparel, is “made for travelers, by travelers.” I’ve been using Unbound Apparel for over 7 years, starting with their first version of the Merino T-Shirt. So, I was excited to add a pair of their pants to my travel wardrobe.

The Pros
- Extremely comfortable. The Unbound Merino travel pants are soft and easy to move in–it’s the first thing you’ll notice when you wear them. 100% Merino wool does feel lighter and noticeably softer than average Merino wool or cotton.
- Well-designed slim fit. While the Chino slim fit may be a bit tight for those with bigger legs, the fabric doesn’t restrict movement at all.
- Keep shape after use. The travel pants don’t lose their shape and stay wrinkle-free even after use. You can go multiple wears before needing a rewash.
- Useful hidden back zipper pocket. The travel pants come with hidden back zipper pockets designed to keep essentials stashed, like wallets, keys, and other valuables.
- Breathable and light fabric. Merino wool isn’t itchy or heavy at all. The fabric feels silky smooth, which means you can wear it and travel with complete ease–even in warmer climates.
- Super Sustainable. Unbound Merino uses sustainably sourced, mulesing-free and Woolmark-certified Merino, known as the world’s finest and softest wool. It’s made according to the “highest standards related to fibre content, performance, colour fastness, and dimensional stability,” and more importantly, it’s the result of 200 years of sustainable farming.
The Cons
- No in-between sizes. Even though my slim pair fit well in the legs, the waist ended up being a bit baggy with a slightly looser fit, which is not ideal. For $229, it would be nice to see the in-between sizes to really dial in the fit.
- Expensive. The perks of Merino wool come with an extra cost, and the price is one of its most common drawbacks.
- Unsure about performance in the cold. The travel pants were breathable, light, and quite thin, so it’s questionable how well they’d do in colder climates.
- Hidden zipper compartment can be uncomfortable. If the zipper was slightly more offset towards the side, it would make sitting down more comfortable.

The Bottom Line
I’ve been super impressed with Unbound Merino products over the years. Their travel clothes are versatile, moisture-wicking, wrinkle-resistant, and anti-odor. These come at a higher price point, but if you want to upgrade your travel wardrobe and don’t mind a bit of a splurge, they are worth the price tag.
Their new Merino Travel Pants are a great addition to the product line that I’m excited to add to my travel wardrobe.
