How to Get to North Bay

Located on the Trans-Canada Highway, North Bay is easily accessible from both the southern and northern parts of Ontario.

By Car

Driving is the most convenient way to reach North Bay, Ontario

  • From Toronto, the trip takes about 3.5 hours (345 km/214 miles) heading north along Highway 11.
  • From Ottawa, it’s roughly 4 hours (370 km/230 miles) via Highway 17, a route that follows sections of the historic Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers.

By Bus or Train

Ontario Northland provides bus service linking North Bay with Toronto, Ottawa, and other communities across the north. Train service is more limited, but the line remains part of the region’s heritage railway history, and there are ongoing discussions about restoring passenger rail service.

Getting Around Locally

Having a car makes it easy to explore surrounding highlights like Duchesnay Falls, Trout Lake, or Mattawa River Provincial Park. However, the downtown core is compact, walkable, and filled with shops, restaurants, and street art that are easily enjoyed on foot.

Best Time to Visit North Bay

North Bay is a true four-season destination, with each time of year offering a different way to enjoy the city and its surroundings.

Summer

Long days and warm weather make summer by far the best time to experience everything North Bay has to offer. You can paddle the Mattawa River, hop on a Manitou Islands scenic cruise, relax at Shabogesic Beach, or explore downtown North Bay. Farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and Wednesday night events add to the lively atmosphere.

Fall

In fall, the surrounding forests of the Canadian Shield transform with vibrant colours making the area very picturesque. It’s a quieter time to visit, with crisp air for hiking and less visitors at popular attractions. Mid-October is especially beautiful for leaf peeping.

Winter

North Bay becomes a winter wonderland, drawing outdoor enthusiasts for activities like skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and ice fishing. The city also embraces its snowy climate with cultural events and seasonal charm.

Spring

Spring brings warming temperatures and the return of outdoor activities. Trails like Laurier Woods Conservation Area and Duchesnay Falls are at their best with rushing water and blooming greenery. Late spring (mid-May onward) is a great time for hiking before the summer crowds arrive.

Explore Downtown & Murals

The downtown core of North Bay is a hub of creativity, with colourful street art and local businesses lining Main and Oak Streets. You’ll find cozy stops like Opera Bakery, Octobers Meta, and unique shops that highlight the city’s character.

The area is best explored on foot, where you’ll encounter beautiful murals tucked into alleyways and courtyards. For a deeper dive, follow the self-guided Mural Art Tour to discover works from local and regional artists or take the Holiday Movie Tour, which showcases filming locations from classic Christmas films. Enjoy a Farm-to-Table Dinner at Wistiwasing Farms

For a special evening, head just outside the city to Wistiwasing Farms, where seasonal dinners take place in a stunning garden setting.

Their five-course farm-to-table meals are often themed (we enjoyed French Night), with ingredients harvested directly from the property. Expect dishes built around fresh vegetables, herbs, and locally raised meats, paired with thoughtfully selected wines. Dining here is an immersive experience that connects you with the land and the people who cultivate it.

A true culinary highlight in Northern Ontario!

Paddle to Talon Chutes

One of the most memorable ways to experience Northern Ontario’s natural beauty is by getting out on the water and for us, that was paddling to Talon Chutes on Pimisi Bay.

We joined a guided canoe tour with Shelly from Nature Bound and enjoyed a morning gliding along calm waters before reaching the base of the falls. There was an option to portage up to the top to continue the trip, but we simply climbed to the top of the hill and admired the views.

A guided tour is the perfect way to explore this area. Along the way, you’ll learn about the area’s history and ecology while enjoying a peaceful paddle through pristine wilderness.

Have a Picnic by the Lake

In summer, North Bay offers a unique pop-up picnic program that lets you order curated picnic meals from six local restaurants, then enjoy them in designated spots along the waterfront.

Choose from participating eateries like Opera Bakery + Café, Cecil’s Brewhouse + Kitchen, or Blendz Smoothies, to name just a few, grab your picnic to go and settle into one of the designated picnic spots along the lake.

We grabbed our picnic from Blendz – a delicious California bowl, smoothie, and cookie – perfect for a sunny day and enjoyed it while overlooking the lake.

Stroll the Waterfront

The North Bay waterfront is a lively gathering place in every season, but it shines in summer. Families love the Heritage Carousel and Miniature Railway, while active visitors can rent bikes at the Boathouse and ride along the scenic Kate Pace Way. The fun bikes at the Boathouse are fun, but they also offer a pretty good workout!

Don’t miss the chance to stop at Lee Park, home to the iconic Gateway Arch and CF100 aircraft – symbols of the city’s role as an air base during World War II.

Shop at the Farmers Market

Every Saturday, the North Bay Farmers Market brings life to the downtown, setting up in front of the North Bay Museum. Stalls overflow with local produce, baked goods, handmade crafts, and artisan products, offering the perfect chance to support local growers and creators.

You can wander through the market to find fresh seasonal treats, sample regional specialties, and chat with vendors about their products. It’s a lively, community-focused event that captures the spirit of Northern Ontario and provides an authentic taste of the region.

Dine at Churchill’s and Watch the Sunset

For a classic dining experience, book a table at Churchill’s Prime Rib House, considered one of the finest restaurants in North Bay. Known for its elegant atmosphere and carefully prepared dishes, it’s a great spot to celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a memorable evening.

The menu features high-quality cuts of steak, fresh seafood, and curated wines. After dinner, head just around the corner to Shabogesic Beach or Sunset Park to watch the sky light up over Lake Nipissing.

Experience Trout Lake

On the east side of the city, you’ll find Trout Lake, a pristine freshwater lake that offers countless opportunities for outdoor activities. From kayaking and paddleboarding to swimming at small sandy beaches, it’s a favourite among locals.

In summer, the lake truly comes alive during Boatapalooza, an annual event hosted by Average Joe’s, where music, food, and community spirit converge on the water. Whether you visit during the festival or on a quiet day, Trout Lake showcases the natural beauty that makes North Bay such a hidden gem.

Take a Sunset Cruise on Chief Commanda II

A ride aboard the Chief Commanda II is a North Bay tradition. This historic vessel has been cruising the waters of Lake Nipissing for decades, offering one of the most scenic ways to explore the area.

The Manitou Islands scenic cruise is especially popular, offering views of the five Manitou Islands (including Great Manitou Island), stories about its cultural significance, and a chance to experience the lake at golden hour.

We did a sunset cruise along Callander Bay, which was not only educational but also delicious. The cruise included a BBQ dinner – a 3 course meal with an appetizer, main and desserts — perfect for a celebratory evening. Watching the sun dip below the horizon from the deck was definitely a highlight.

Hike Duchesnay Falls

Just minutes from downtown, Duchesnay Falls is one of the most accessible natural attractions in North Bay. A short trail leads to the base of this cascading waterfall, and several paths allow you to climb along either side for different viewpoints.

Surrounded by forest and rocky outcrops, the area is especially beautiful in spring when the water flow is at its peak. With trails that range from easy strolls to moderate climbs, it’s a great spot for families, photographers, and hikers alike. Don’t miss it – it’s one of North Bay’s most iconic outdoor activities.

Go Fishing on the French River

Just west of North Bay, the French River is a legendary waterway that connects Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay. Designated as a Canadian Heritage River, it has long been a vital route for Indigenous communities, fur traders, and settlers.

Today, it’s one of the best spots in Northern Ontario for fishing. Anglers come here to catch walleye, northern pike, bass, and muskie in its winding channels and sheltered bays. You’ll also find a variety of lodges and outfitters along the Upper French River that provide equipment rentals, guided trips, and cozy places to stay after a day on the water.

Join Free Waterfront Yoga (Seasonal)

Every Sunday in the summer, the North Bay waterfront transforms into an open-air yoga studio with free classes hosted by Grounded Studios. Held at the Kiwanis Bandshell, the sessions bring together locals and visitors for an hour of movement and mindfulness by the lake.

The gathering draws quite the crowd. With over 60 people participating in the free class weekly, it’s a wonderful way to connect with the community while enjoying fresh air and beautiful views of Lake Nipissing. Bring your own mat, join the group for an hour of movement, and soak up the atmosphere.

Pick Strawberries at Leisure Farms

Located in nearby Sturgeon Falls, just a short drive from North Bay, Leisure Farms is a family-run operation that has become a local favourite for seasonal produce and community events.

In the summer, you can take part in berry picking, with fields of strawberries, raspberries, and haskaps ripe for harvest or pick up a wide selection of farm fresh vegetables and sweet corn. In the fall, the farm transforms with pumpkins, wagon rides, and family-friendly fun like a corn maze, straw maze, playground, and even a haunted barn. Special events such as pancake breakfasts and themed days give plenty of reasons to return for more.

Where to Stay in North Bay

North Bay offers a range of accommodations, from familiar hotel chains to cozy B&Bs and family-run motels. Whether you’re looking for a full-service hotel with amenities or a simple base for exploring Northern Ontario’s natural beauty, you’ll find options to suit every style of travel.

Many of the larger hotels are located close to the downtown core or along Lake Nipissing, providing easy access to restaurants, shops, and the North Bay waterfront.

During our visit, we stayed at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, which proved to be an excellent base for exploring. The hotel is located downtown, just steps from restaurants, coffee shops, and the North Bay waterfront. Suites are spacious, with full kitchens and comfortable living areas – ideal for both short stays and longer visits.

Sustainable Travel Tips for North Bay

North Bay’s blend of natural beauty and focus on community makes it an easy destination for those wanting to travel sustainably in Ontario.

Here are a few ways you can keep your visit low-impact while visiting North Bay:

  • Support local farmers and artisans. Shop at the North Bay Farmers’ Market or visit places like Leisure Farms to buy seasonal produce and handmade goods. Your dollars stay in the community and help small businesses thrive.
  • Choose eco-conscious dining. Opt for restaurants that highlight local ingredients, such as the farm-to-table dinners at Wistiwasing Farms or cafés like Opera Bakery, which source fresh, regional produce.
  • Respect natural spaces. Trails like Laurier Woods Conservation Area and Duchesnay Falls are easily accessible, but stick to marked paths to protect fragile ecosystems. Carry out all waste and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Embrace active transportation. The North Bay waterfront and downtown core are compact and walkable, while the Kate Pace Way trail is perfect for cycling. Renting a bike instead of driving reduces emissions and lets you see the city at a slower pace.
  • Learn about Indigenous culture. North Bay lies within the traditional territory of the Nipissing First Nation. Look for opportunities to learn about local traditions, such as the Seven Grandfather Teachings, and engage respectfully with Indigenous-owned businesses and initiatives.

By making mindful choices, you can enjoy North Bay’s attractions while helping preserve its environment and culture for future generations.
