If you’re a traveler in this digital age, you probably know that your personal information is more at risk when you’re on the go. If you use your computer or smartphone with public wifi at cafés or hotels around the globe, your data is at risk of being compromised.

If you’re looking into data security while traveling, you might have heard that installing a VPN is a wise idea and we couldn’t agree more.

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, and at its most basic, it is a virtual shield between you and the internet at large.

If you’re on any kind of public wifi (or even a private one that you don’t own,) your private information such as credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, or travel reservations are essentially floating around out there for anyone to see.

With identity theft on the rise and with computer hackers becoming more skilled by the day, the fact of the matter is that if you’re using public networks without a VPN, it’s only a matter of time before your data is compromised.

A VPN solves all of these problems, providing you with strong security to protect your digital information. But it also offers travelers a few other additional benefits.

The Benefits of Using a VPN

Data Protection

Cybersecurity should be a serious concern for the frequent traveler, especially someone traveling for work or using their computers abroad. By encrypting your data, your private information becomes indiscernible to hackers and identity thieves.

A VPN gives you total peace of mind that your passwords and credit card numbers are safe.

Complete Privacy

These days, it’s easier than ever for people to track your behaviour online. Any travel plans you make or files your share can be easily tracked if they’re not protected. A VPN serves like a shield for any information you transmit online, offering you total privacy from prying (or hacking) eyes.

Access to Restricted Content

Have you ever had the experience of trying to access your shows, music, or other content while abroad but not being able to since you’re in another country? A VPN solves this problem easily by “tricking” the server into thinking that you are accessing the internet from your home country.

A VPN can also offer a solution for accessing websites that might be blocked by the government of the countries that you may be visiting.

A VPN is an absolute must for those traveling to China or the United Arab Emirates where many social media sites, along with Google may be inaccessible without a VPN.

As frequent travelers, we’ve been using a VPN for years. We’ve tested a number of different VPN providers ranging from free services like Hola to paid subscriptions like Express VPN and NordVPN.

Our Recommended VPN Provider: NordVPN

In our experience, NordVPN is the best affordable VPN service. We’ve used NordVPN for close to a year now and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable affordable VPN solution.

NordVPN offers military-grade double encryption, sending your data through two different servers in two different locations. Essentially, this just means your private information is protected by two ultra-strong shields against would-be hackers.

With NordVPN, you can secure up to six different devices through just one account. NordVPN offers over 5,000 serves in 62 countries that you can connect to at any time. You can choose to connect to your home country or any other available destination. NordVPN also keeps no logs of your activity online, allowing for complete and total privacy.

We use our NordVPN service on a daily basis while on the road. We love being able to catch up on news from Canada by connecting to a Canadian server and streaming CTV right on our iPad, or just being able to securely access our bank accounts while abroad.

Did you know that some banks won’t let you access online banking if you are abroad? Yeah, we learned that the hard way! Luckily, with NordVPN, we were able to reroute our server through Canada/USA and successfully log into our accounts

And of course, NordVPN was absolutely critical to have during our recent trip to China.

  1. Same for me! I am always using NordVPN when I am traveling. Last summer I was traveling not only in Asia, but in Australia too and this provider performed perfectly. So if anyone is planning holidays there I suggest Nord.
