Compared to our adventures in August and September, October was a pretty laid back month for us. After a month in Europe, we made our way back to North America and enjoyed a few weeks of catching up with family and friends in Toronto. Max made a quick trip to spend some time with his mom in Florida and in mid-October we flew back down to Costa Rica.

This year Costa Rica has become a bit of home base for us. It’s a great quiet place to catch up on work, unwind after months on the road, and spend some quality time with our not-so-little-kitty, Mia, who has now claimed Costa Rica as her rightful home. (She climbs trees, hunts lizards, and bosses around the neighbourhood dogs)

Costa Rica is not a bad place for a home base…

What’s exciting about spending time in Costa Rica is that there are still lots of places we haven’t visited around the country, so every time we are back here, we make plans to check out a new area. So at the end of the month, just in time for my birthday we traveled to Arenal and spent 5 wonderful days exploring the area of La Fortuna… but more on that in our travel highlights section!

Here are some stats from the month of October:

Countries/Cities/Towns Visited

Canada: Toronto

Costa Rica: Playa Avellanas, Tamarindo, La Fortuna

Photos Taken

This month we gave our cameras (and ourselves) a bit of a rest and snapped only 500 photos.

Money Spent

We rocked our budget this month! If you don’t count our flights to Costa Rica, we only spend $790 on transportation, food, activities, and accommodation. With flights, our total spend was $1,400.

Travel Highlights

The highlight of October was definitely the 5 days we spent in La Fortuna, exploring the area near Arenal Volcano. We timed it to coincide with my birthday, making the trip that much more special and enjoyable. Arenal Volcano is one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica and the area around the volcano is famous for an abundance of natural hot springs, adventure activities, and great accommodation choices. We went hiking, soaked in hot springs, and enjoyed an adventurous day rafting with a local adventure company, Desafio.

…and Lowlights

With limited adventures planned for October, our biggest low light is that we spent the majority of this month working. We’ve been putting in a lot of hours to catch up on existing projects, kick start some new ones, and set ourselves up for our upcoming trip to Colombia. Spending our days in front of the computer is not fun, so we are looking forward to being able to strike a better work/travel balance in November.

Favourite Accommodation

Our favourite accommodation this month was the beautiful Arenal Springs Resort & Spa, a 4-star resort just outside of La Fortuna that hosted us during our visit to Arenal. We stayed in their Junior Suite and were spoiled with beautiful views of the Arenal Volcano from our room window. It added so much to our experience!

Plus, there was daily yoga classes (my favourite hotel perk), a decent gym (Max’s favourite), and on-site hot springs that served as the perfect escape on rainy afternoons and after long days of activities.
